Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu

Created in 1681 on an area of 32, 592 hectares, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is what might be considered the unit of the country's largest conservation. The reasons for this award are many, but perhaps its mixture of natural and cultural riches makes this place so attractive, which is often considered as the main tourist destination in South America.

Located 120 kilometers from the city of Cuzco and at an altitude of 2, 400 m., Surrounded by lush vegetation, the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu is situated on top of the mountain of the same name, on the steep slopes that form the narrow valley of the Vilcanota River.

The tropical climate of this Sanctuary, characterized by abundant rainfall and two distinct seasons throughout the year (rainy season from December to April and a dry season from May to November), corresponds to the cloud forests of the high Peruvian forest .

The central area of the Sanctuary is the archaeological complex of Machu Picchu, a set of different constructions in urban and agricultural sectors that form a tight system extending over nearly 800 meters measured in a straight line. They are, however, mostly ceremonial buildings that attract attention. The perfection of the walls almost overflows the boundaries of imagination, as in the case of so-called Main Temple.

The precise function of this citadel is still unknown. Several hypotheses attributed ceremonial purposes of defense against attacks by "antis", or as a residence city of Cuzco. What is certain is that the citadel has the characteristics of a fortress, and its location on top of the mountain one of its main advantages, and also to stay out of sight of potential intruders, makes the access be extremely difficult.

Although often overlooked, much of the fabulous experience of visiting Machu Picchu is due precisely to its environment. Indeed, the famous and abundant surrounding buildings of the citadel are nestled in one of the most spectacular scenery in the world: cloud forests.
